It is a low alloy steel containing 2.25% of chromium content. ASTM A182 is supplied in tempered and normalized conditions. It is austenitic chromium and nickel steel grade. It has a composition of moly content that provides excellent resistance to corrosion even to pitting and crevice corrosion that contains some amount of chlorides. This grade is solution annealed developed for chemical processing applications where enhanced corrosion resistance is required.
ALLOY STEEL ASTM A182 GR F22 Forged Fittings are forged between 1000 deg C to 1200 deg C. hot working above 927 deg C should not be recommended. Addition to low carbon content ensures no heavy scale is occurred to prevent enlargement of grain size. Alloy steel forged fittings are not hardenable by the heat treatment process, therefore, the annealing process is done up to 1040 deg C. after annealing it is cooled by water. Forged fittings are readily machinable in the annealed condition.
However, these forged fittings are not resistive to hot sea water. Warm chloride containing environments can cause crevice and pitting corrosion cracking, here alloy steel forge fittings will suffer from stress corrosion cracking above 60 deg C. ASTM A182 forged fittings have good resistance to oxidation in fluctuating environments up to 870 deg C and give continuous service up to 925 deg C., however, continue service of ALLOY STEEL ASTM A182 GR F22 Forged Fittings is not recommended between 425 deg C to 860 deg C. the lower carbon version of forged fittings are not recommended because of its resistance to carbide precipitation.
ASTM A182 GR F22 Forged Fittings have high strength above 500 deg C. it is austenitic grade thus it is readily weldable by common resistance and fusion welding, however, special consideration is taken to avoid hot cracking.
