Stainless Steel 321H Pipes & Tubes are made of higher carbon version of 321 grades. These pipes and tubes are developed for enhanced creep resistance and for higher strength at a temperature above 1000 deg F. in most cases; carbon content enables the dual certifications. However, SS 321H pipes and tubes are not hardened by heat treatment operations, only just by cold working operations. Effectively, these can be manufactured or welded by standard shop fabrication operations.
These pipes and tubes show excellent corrosion resistance similar to the 300 series. They were intended to use in chromium carbide precipitation range between 1800 deg F to 1500 deg F where usually unalloyed pipes and tubes are subject to intergranular attacks. Stainless steel pipes and tubes can be used in a most dilute organic compound containing environments at moderate temperatures. Also, 321h prevent polythionic acids from stress corrosion cracking. Moreover, SS 321H pipes and tubes can also perform well in environments containing chlorides or fluorides free solutions at nominal temperatures. However, these got affected while servicing higher concentrations of chemicals.
Machining results of 321H grade is good, only it requires slow speed and heavy feeds. Welding of pipes and tubes are easier as 321H has good welding attributes. The standard process such as resistance and arc welding is best suited for welding. In addition to titanium, it prevents carbide precipitation. Hot working operations are readily done temperatures up to 2100 deg F to 2300 deg F. Pipes and tubes must be water quenched or annealed completely after working to attain maximum corrosion resistance. 321H is slightly tough and ductile, thus cold working requires higher initial forces. It is annealed in temperatures between 1800 deg F to 2000 deg F.
