Rods made of En8 acquire properties such as excellent tensile strength. It has medium strength for the fabrication of products such as studs, shafts, gears, and general-purpose axles. In any condition, this mild carbon steel can be machined. En 8 is intermediate carbon steel that is unalloyed. It is also known as 080M40. Less amount of carbon is present in this steel that offers better mechanical properties. Hence, they are easy to work with however welding is quite difficult.

En 8 rods are heat-treated which gives them a good surface hardness. Induction hardening gives it moderate wear resistance. However, if the steel is welded above 18 mm than heat treatment is required to prevent cracking of the steel. Large sizes rods are generally served untreated as the core of the bar losses mechanical properties but they are treated after initial stock removal to provide better properties.
