SS 304 has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of reducing environments and exposed in mild cyclic environments. Resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion can be attained in environments that contain high levels of chlorides. SS sheets and plates can oppose stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60 deg C.
Stainless Steel 304 Sheets and Plates have a higher resistance to oxidation in fluctuating service up to 870 deg C and offer continuous service up to 925 deg C. However, continuous service above this temperature is not recommended if corrosion resistance is required. For cases in carbide precipitation range, 304 lower carbon versions is not recommended. Where high strength is must at temperatures between 500 deg C to 800 deg C, SS 304 sheets and plates are used. 304 stainless steel grade will retain higher corrosion resistance and properties.
Fabrication of stainless steel sheets and plates are done with tools and machines dedicated to these materials. Tooling surface and workpiece must be cleaned before fabrication of sheets and plates. Special precautions are required to prevent cross contamination. stainless steel 304 grade can readily work hardens, fabrication operations include cold working may in cyclic annealing stage to raise work hardening and to prevent cracking or tearing. At the completion of manufacturing full annealing, operations are performed to lower internal stresses and optimize corrosion resistance. The hot working operations should be performed by uniform heating between 1149 deg C to 1260 deg C. the fabricated stainless steel sheets and plates are rapidly cooled to assure enhanced corrosion resistance.
Heat treatment of Stainless Steel 304 Sheets and Plates cannot be done by heat treatment operations. Solution annealing operations may be preferred.
