Stainless Steel 316L Sheets and Plates are molybdenum containing austenitic stainless steel sheets and plates mostly used to provided corrosion resistance relative to 300 series grades in moderately corrosive environments. These are also used in environments having halides and chlorides. Type SS 316L is non-magnetic in nature when annealed, but turns slightly magnetic after welding operations.
It is general for type 316L grades to be dual certified when materials meet lower and higher carbon limit and strength of 316. This depends on the end application requirements of customers.
In addition to molybdenum in 316L grade, it gets improved resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion in moderate to concentric environments. SS 316L Sheets and plates have been used in handling various chemicals encountered in the process industries. Chemicals like acetic acids, phosphoric acids, nitric acids, and sulfuric acids do not affect these sheets and plates.
DESCRIPTION
Annealing of type 316 sheets and plates are performed temperatures up to 1900 deg F and water quenched or other means rapidly. Stainless steel sheets and plates are suitable for heading, drawing, bending, and upsetting. Hardening cannot be done by heat treatment operations, only cold working is recommended. 316L sheets and plates are readily formed and fabricated through a full range of cold working process.
CONCLUSION
The cold working operations will increase the hardness and strength of materials. Hot working is done be between 1700 deg F to 2200 deg F, in same it can be forged. The forging operation should be done at 1900 deg F for maximum corrosion resistance.
